Inviting Outdoor Living Spaces

Outdoor living spaces today are extensions of our homes. The stores are full of options from indoor/outdoor rugs and pillows, to fireplaces and fire pits. Most of us spend many hours inside during the winter and can’t get enough of the fresh air during the warmer months. Why not make your outdoor living space as nice as the inside of your home? Comfortable furniture is a must. I love the addition of an ottoman. Who doesn’t like to put their feet up to relax, especially when outdoors? Pillows add great pops of color and are also great for back support in larger furniture. During the day, umbrellas offer great relief from the hot sun. Light throws are perfect for chilly evenings. Speaking of colder weather, fireplaces and fire pits have become wildly popular. If you love to entertain, large dining tables will accommodate your alfresco dining. Invest in some great pieces that you can enjoy year after year. Bring the indoors outside and make it inviting.

Sigh. Once again I’m reminded of the difference between US and UK living! I completely agree that the outdoors should be viewed as an extension of our home, another room. It’s a common approach in Australia but rarely the view here in London, and whilst I get that the weather is rubbish most of the time, I still love to make the most of our small space when we can. Hubby and I recently purchased a rug for our outdoor area, prompting much hilarity from our friends. I’m starting to feel that between the lack of understanding around centrepieces and the great outdoors – that I either need to move – or get some more likeminded friends! 🙂
